Help - my parents won't let me buy protein shakes?
The situation usually goes a little something like this...
I am 16 and I started working out a year ago and I have a big problem because my parents won't let me take whey protein or creatine? They think it's full of steroids, that it's dangerous, and it will stunt my growth and give me kidney problems. How can I convince them that supplements are actually healthy? I'm really pissed off because they won't let me take any supplements. What can I do?
I can relate to this all too well because I started working out when I was 12 years old and at the beginning my parents felt the same way - NO Protein, NO Vitamins, NO Supplements - You can get "everything you need from your diet".
Ironically most people who say that you can get everything you need from your diet don't have a clue what their actual diet consists of; meaning they don't know how many calories, protein, carbs, fat, or nutrients they are eating. All they really know is that they eat when they are hungry and stop eating when their belly. Yet they are convinced that they get everything they need without measuring or tracking anything... But that's besides the point.
Back to parents saying "NO To Supplements"...
First off you need to realize where your parents are coming from. You are the most important person in your mom and dad's world, you are their pride and joy, and they want to do everything they can to look after you and keep you safe. So when they so NO Supplements they are not doing it to try and hurt you, but rather to try and protect you.
Chances are your anti-supplement parents probably don't workout themselves, they probably don't have any education in nutrition (whether formal or self taught) and the whole topic of nutritional supplements is just confusing to them. And as they say in sales a confused mind always says "NO".
So the first step you can take is to try and educate your parents. Show them information that supplements such as protein powder, vitamins, etc. are actually good for you. That they strengthen your immune system and make you healthier rather than cause harm. Explain to them that protein is not steroids. In fact the raw ingredients in most protein supplements comes from milk and eggs 2 things which most parents would agree are very healthy high nutrient foods.
You can even show them evidence that they themselves - meaning your mom and dad - would benefit from taking nutritional supplements. After all you don't have to be a bodybuilder to eat better and look after your health and fitness. Everyone from children to senior citizens can benefit from proper nutrition and nutritional supplements.

However, even after all of that. Some parents will still be convinced that supplements are bad, that they are dangerous, not natural, not safe, or that they are just too expensive and they will still say NO.
If that's the case, just let it go. You can't convince everyone, some people are just set in their ways, and they'll be that way for the rest of their days.
So. if your mom and dad don't want you to take protein powder and they can't be convinced otherwise. Respect their decision and let it go. As long as you are living under their roof you have to obey by their rules. It's not worth having a grudge against your parents over something as simple as protein powder.
And besides that you can still make great progress in the gym by simply working out consistently and eating as much good healthy food as you can. The foundation to any bodybuilding program still lies with being consistent with your workouts, your recovery, and and the food you eat. Maximize those things and you'll still be able to get in great shape.
Then when you are all grown up and living on your own, paying your own bills and buying your own food you can also buy your own nutritional supplements as well. But in the mean time when you are living with mom and dad, respect their decisions and be grateful for all the things they do for you.
